Sources Chrétiennes

This site, which is connected to the Institut des Sources Chrétiennes, offers a database which is useful to find specific contributions from the Sources Chrétiennes. In the section of “Auteur anciens” and the following “Accès par pôle”, you will find the section “Hagiographie (monde grec)”, which lists a few hagiographers. There is only little biographical information but there are references to their works and positions in the PG. Moreover, the website provides a list of their published works. In general, the site also gives content descriptions of the editions published in the Sources Chrétiennes. The entire website is in French.

Christian Classics Ethereal Library

The Christian Classics Ethereal Library provides access to Christian literature from all time periods. All documents, which can either be read online or downloaded, allow for a full text search. Conveniently, the entire content of the CCEL is searchable by author, title, format, subject and language. Additionally, they list the writings of the Early Church Fathers. The website does also have an online version of the Bible and offers several other English Bible translations, which is very useful in terms of comparison and close-reading research. Every work, which the CCEL provides access to, is linked to the online Bible. Thus, it is possible to have a look at several Bible commentaries as well as “Sermons and Meditation”, “Hymns” and other works which are referring to a unique verse of the Scripture.

Syriaca – Qadishe and BHSE

The website Syriaca combines five databases, two on Syrian saints, both of which are open access. The database Qadishe, the Syriac term for „saint“, is a personal database of Syrian saints and authors who have written hagiographic texts about Syrian saints or about Syrian authors of hagiographic texts in general. The database offer several search options: time restriction, gender, related persons, places and works. There is also an alphabetical listing of all entries.
The second database BHSE (Bibliotheca Hagiographica Syriaca Electronica) is a database of Syrian hagiographic texts or hagiographic texts about Syrian saints. A total of over 1800 entries have already been included. The entries provide information on the author, tradition, beginning and end of the text as well as a bibliography. Here, too, there are numerous search options: for example, you can search for keywords, authors, but also for modern translations. The search for related persons is very useful. Both databases can thus be linked in the work and unfold their full potential in their interaction. The BSHE also offers an alphabetical listing of all entries.

Ménestrel: Medieval Latin Hagiography

Ménestrel collects web resources on medieval studies and aims to contribute to the networking in the field at a European level. The website is in English but the entries are mostly in French. The web resources are grouped into different topics of medieval research and there is a sub-section on Latin hagiography. The entry is divided into five parts: it offers an overview of websites on hagiography, up-to-date bibliographies (as of January 2020) on hagiography and an overview of digitised works. In addition, there is a guide to the documentation of specific saints in the Middle Ages – from source to literature research. The last section gives an overview of websites where current research developments can be traced. If you know French, this site is a great introduction to Latin hagiography.
